Fol-de-rol is one of those wonderful old words that looks great on the page, and sounds great when you say it, as it lends itself to a dramatic delivery: “You waste my time with your fol-de-rol!” It is more commonly spelled as folderol, but I like hyphens. As we travel further back in time, it is seen as fal-de-ral, fal de ral, or falderal.
Fol-de-rol is nonsense, a trifle, folly, foolishness, hooey, malarkey…you get the drift. You can even sing it, and why not because its origin was in song choruses like fal de ral, to de ral, nonny nonny hey and such, which are great fun to sing.
The next time you want a superior word for calling out nonsense, use fol-de-rol.
